A Map of Resistance to Fossil Fuels in the US

11/20/17

Looking for people who are standing up to the fossil-fuel industry in the United States? Feeling alone in your local efforts to combat pipelines, leaks, fracking or other oil, coal and gas nastiness?

The Fossil Fuel Resistance Mapping Project is your essential ally. A joint undertaking by the Power Shift Network and 350.org, two of our most ardent climate-change opponents, the interactive map shows where locally-led actions are happening across all fifty states. Grassroots or organized, conventional and not, the movements on display demonstrate the ardor and diversity of our great struggle.

Launched in September, the online map connects to each group's name, contains information on what they're fighting and how they're fighting it, and has contact data. Most groups are more than willing to accept new members. You can add your organization to the map by following simple instructions, and use the map to help mobilize and unite your neighbors in your local action.

"Many communities are leading fights against fossil fuel projects amidst life-altering climate impacts," the map's organizers say. "While each fight relies on the passion and leadership of local organizing, we wanted to illustrate that these aren’t isolated fights, but a groundswell of steadfast and widespread resistance across the continent. Grassroots leaders in these efforts are pushing back on the fossil fuel industry’s injustices, from environmental racism to violating Indigenous sovereignty."

This is a transcendentally important addition to the country's climate struggle.
