We build ice creams using our unique recipe honed and perfected over the years. Our ice creams have a uniquely smooth texture and buttercream body, with bright flavour and clean finish. We’re here to set new standards for ice cream classics and to create our own. At 49 Below, you’ll find flavours inspired by our curiosities— travel, cuisine, pop culture, and beyond—that simply don’t exist anywhere else.

Working Sustainably

Upcycled with The Root Cellar

According to the BC government, 40% of our produce ends up in the landfill. Not cool. Much of what ends up being trashed is perfect to eat, it’s just a little blemished or misshaped. Still delicious, just not what people grab first. We are taking this sad produce and giving it new life.

Introducing Upcycled Ice Cream!
Together with The Root Cellar we transform imperfect yet ready & ripe fruit (and sometimes veggies) left behind on the shelves into small batch ice creams. Each batch is as unique as the produce it’s made from, so you never know what exciting flavour is coming next!

49 Below works to improve sustainability. We understand that the challenges our world collectively faces are complex, significant, and unprecedented. We as a company will always do our best with the resources available to lessen our environmental impact.

Our values will lead us to:

• Source our ingredients locally whenever possible
• Reduce waste where possible, reuse whatever we can and recycle or compost as we are able
• Grow as a business purposefully and sustainably
• Establish sustainable procedures with employees to reduce waste

Current actions:

• We use reusable tasting spoons
• We work with the Root Cellar to upcycle produce & reduce food waste
• We use compostable spoons and cups
• We have an in-store recycling and composting program
• We donate our milk jugs to Oak Bay High School's bottle drive monthly
• We allow customers to bring their own containers
• We use an electric company vehicle
• We use Nature Bee Soap Tablets for low-waste hand soap
• We have LED lighting in the store
• We have re-using ice packs up cycled from pet stores
• We use high-efficiency heating and refrigeration
