Friends of Trees

Friends of Trees empowers people to improve the natural world around them through a simple solution: Planting Trees. Together.

We were founded in 1989 by a community member who loved trees and started planting them in Portland neighborhoods.

Today, Friends of Trees is a nationally recognized, regional leader in improving the urban tree canopy and restoring sensitive natural areas—through programs delivered by thousands of volunteers. Friends of Trees greens our region while building community.

Since Friends of Trees was founded by Richard Seidman in 1989, we have planted 600,000+ trees and native plants.

In our last planting season, 6,252 volunteers donated 41,540 hours to help plant 55,943 trees and native shrubs during 126 planting and tree-care events, in 17 cities, 6 counties, across 2 states.
