The Institute for Natural Resources

In 2001, the Oregon Legislature established the Institute for Natural Resources (INR) to help link the knowledge and expertise of Oregon's universities to natural resource decision making. We are headquartered at Oregon State University and have offices at Portland State University.

Our mission is to provide access to integrated knowledge and information to inform natural resource decision-making and develop solutions in the context of sustainability. We help decision-makers identify and use relevant science in making natural resource policy and management decisions.

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is a wildlife rehabilitation facility, where we rescue and rehabilitate injured or orphaned animals and birds and return them to their ecosystem.

Since our inception, over 30,000 "patients" (animals and birds) and 300 species of birds have been treated. We provide a variety of services to our community. Many of our programs include rescue, rehabilitation, and release, adopt-a-bird and donation options, educational classes for the public, institutional research, and guided waterfront tours for all ages.

Food Solutions New England (FSNE) is a regional, collaborative network organized around a single goal: to transform the New England food system into a resilient driver of racial equity and food justice, health, sustainable farming and fishing, and thriving communities.

We serve as a convener, cultivator, and champion of our regional food system:

Convener
FSNE brings together individuals and organizations to strengthen our regional food system. Our annual New England Food Summits are one example of this effort.

The Wetlands Initiative is dedicated to restoring the wetland resources of the Midwest to improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and reduce flood damage.

Our vision is simple: Wetlands are more valuable wet than dry.

TWI is a leader in showing through its own restoration projects how wetlands long drained and degraded can be returned to high-quality wetland ecosystems again able to perform their natural “services,” such as cleaning water, providing habitat and sequestering carbon.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Education Center offers a variety of programs to inspire our community to explore the science of renewable energy. We offer community group tours, power lunch lectures, and scheduled programs for 4th grade to college-aged students.

NREL staff members lead adult programs for interested community members, including an introduction to NREL and discussions about innovations in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. We also offer building and campus tours.

The Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a non-profit education, research, and demonstration organization based in Austin, TX, designs and tests innovative programs to build sustainable communities.

We undertake projects based on their potential contribution to site, regional and global sustainability and human health, and actively pursue collaborations with associate organizations, businesses and professional firms.

Oregon Sustainable Agriculture Land Trust holds agricultural land in and near Portland for purposes of research and education on sustainable agriculture.

OSALT acts as an umbrella organization that provides land, management processes and non-profit status to local communities for sustainable food production through gardening, farming, research and education.

We now hold seven pieces of land in trust. Some are farms outside the city of Portland; some are community gardens in the city.

Oregon Natural Desert Association

Oregon’s desert is known for its stunning beauty, biological significance, recreational opportunities and cultural value. Much of Oregon’s high desert is publicly-owned land primarily managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ONDA works with this agency and others every day to ensure that vast swaths of your lands remain wild, open spaces that will be there for future generations to enjoy.

The Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council works with school decision-makers, community volunteers and thought leaders to drive progress at the intersection of sustainability, education, public health and the built environment.

We connect volunteers and green school advocates worldwide.
Every year, tens of thousands of volunteers participate in the global Green Apple Day of Service to make our schools healthier and more sustainable. The Center also hosts the annual Green Schools Conference & Expo to connect green schools advocates nationwide.
